Daughter of Benjamin Brister and Sarah "Sally" Dillard. Melvinia married Asa "Ace" Rutland as his first wife on 19 June 1846 in Lawrence County, MS. She and Ace made their home in the Ruth Community then located in Lawrence County but now in Lincoln County. She is believed to be buried at their old home place or Antioch, in an unmarked grave.
