Long Beach State track and field athlete Cameron Gillett died in a car accident in Long Beach early Friday morning.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Cameron," said 49er athletic director Vic Cegles. "He was an outstanding young man who was admired by his teammates and fellow student-athletes. Our condolences go out to his family and friends."

Gillett was a junior who was majoring in economics at Long Beach State. He was a native of Norwalk and a graduate of La Mirada High School.

"News of this morning's event is very painful to accept," LBSU head coach Andy Sythe said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out immediately to his family and to our student-athletes at the University who deeply cared for Cameron. Something like this is a loss that all of us feel and will be deeply affected by."

Gillett, who came to Long Beach State as a jumper, was one of the 49ers' top performers in the long jump and had also evolved into a conference contender in the 400-meter. He recently won the long jump at the Big West Challenge and had a season-best 48.35 in the 400m.

In 2010, Gillett placed sixth overall in the long jump at the Big West Championships with a collegiate-best 23-05.50.

"Cameron was a terrific young man with an unforgettable smile," Sythe said. "He had a great attitude and love for his teammates."

At La Mirada High School, Gillett was the 2008 California state champion in the long jump as he registered a personal-record 24-01.75.

"It is a great tragedy when the life of a university student is lost. Cameron Gillett represented Long Beach State proudly as an athlete, and was a student who showed great promise in his chosen major of economics," said CSULB President F. King Alexander. "We understand that words are never enough in times like this as we offer our sincere condolences to Cameron's family, teammates and friends. He will be dearly missed."

Funeral services for Cameron will be held on Friday, May 13 at 10 a.m. at Zoe Christian Fellowship Church in Whittier.
