MOORHEAD, Minn., Jan. 14 [1995] -- A mother and six children were killed Saturday in an early morning fire that swept their apartment in the Minnesota community of Moorhead, across the border from Fargo, North Dakota, fire officials said.

Firefighters were called to the four-unit building just after 6 a.m. and doused the blaze within minutes.

A subsequent search uncovered the bodies of the seven dead in a basement apartment, Moorhead Fire Chief Gary Schultz said. The children ranged in age from 2 to 10. The mother has been identified as Terry Ann Carrillo, 31, while the children were still being positively identified. According to police, the fire apparently started in a couch located in the basement apartment. The building suffered mostly smoke damage and it appeared the victims all died of smoke inhalation. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries fighting the blaze in cold, icy conditions, Schultz said. There were no other injuries among the building's residents. The State Fire Marshal was on the scene investigating the cause of the fire.
