DYERSVILLE, Iowa -- Ira L. Fendell, 85, of Dyersville, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at home, in the presence of his family.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, with the Rev. Dennis Quint officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 137. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 3 p.m. and an American Legion service at 7 p.m.

He was born on March 17, 1926, son of Albert and Mary (Fangmann) Fendell, on the family farm south of Dyersville. He served in the Army from 1945 to 1946 in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.

He married Germaine Johannes on May 14, 1960, at St. John's Catholic Church in Delhi. Together they moved into town. He continued to farm and became a sales representative for Lifetime Farm Products.

Farming always was a passion of Ira's, and he loved spending time visiting with customers, his family and friends. He also loved to watch baseball.

Ira was a member of American Legion Post 137.

Surviving are his wife, Germaine; a son, Randy (friend, Wendy ElHussien) Fendell and a daughter, Renee (friend, Dave Gibbs) Fendell, all of Dyersville; a sister-in-law, Arlene Johannes; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; a brother-in-law, Arthur Johannes; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Rita (Emil) Boge.
