Long Life Ends of Old Settler

Came to California in Ante Gold Discovery Days

Son of Pioneer Who Emigrated from New Mexico to Make Home in Yolo County

John Gordon, an old-time settle, died suddenly at this home near Guinda yesterday morning of heart trouble aged 79 years. Up to a short time before his death he had been in comparatively good health but death came unheralded at an early hour in the morning

John Gordon was born June 29, 1829, in New Mexico, and was the son of William Gordon a pioneer settler of Yolo county, who located near Cache creek in 1842. After the death of mother in 1855, his father married Elizabeth Coram. A sister of deceased married Nathan Coombs and their daughter was the first white child born in Yolo County.

After the arrival of the Gordons the son John made his home with his father for nearly ten years. Their first house was built of poles set on end and mud filled the cracks to serve as a wall.

John Gordon married Rebecca Potter in 1851. In 1864 he was married to Mary Rhodes who survives him together with six children, three sons and three daughters, all of whom with one exception are residents of Yolo county. The funeral will he held tomorrow and interment at Cottonwood cemetery near Madison. (But, he is actually buried in the Gordon Family Cemetery.)
