NORMAN—Memorial service for Frank"Pop"Ivy,87,Norman,will be at 10a.m.Wed.at St.John’s Episcopal Church,Norman.Mr.Ivy died Sat.May 17,2003,in Norman.Arrangements are by Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.He was born Jan.25,1916,near Skiatook,to Claude and Rosa Ivy.He grew up in Skiatook,and graduated from Skiatook High School.He attended the University of Oklahoma on a football scholarship.He married Inez Anita Daniel on June 26,1936.She died in 1994.He played in OU’s first bowl game,the Orange Bowl,on New Year’s Day 1939,and was selected a First Team All-American that year.After graduating from OU in 1940,he joined the Chicago Cardinals professional football team.In his last season,1947,the Cardinals were NFL champions.He was an Army Specialist,and served with the 29th Division as a forward observer during World War II.He was awarded the EAME Service Ribbon with four Bronze Service Stars.He served in the Normandy,Northern France,Rhine and German campaigns.On May 5,1948,he was appointed top assistant to Bud Wilkinson at OU.In 1954,he became head coach of the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.His teams won the Grey Cup,the CFL championship,three years in a row.In 1958,he assumed the head coaching duties of the Chicago Cardinals.In 1961,he was named head coach of the Houston Oilers(now the Tennessee Titans).
