Houston, Tex., Dec. 30 – This afternoon at 3 o'clock the funeral of the late J. Mason Weems took place from his late residence, 158 Walker street, near Hamilton. The remains were followed to their last resting place in Glenwood cemetery by many sad friends. His death occurred last evening at 9:35 o'clock, after a brief illness of only a few days. Though able to be at his post of duty his health has not been vigorous for months, and when last week he took his bed no serious results were thought of and hence until two days before his death the gravity of the situation was not appreciated.
He was a brother of Captain Ben F. Weems and was one of the truest and best men in the city, and by those who knew him was looked upon as one of the best accountants anywhere. He was a bookkeeper for the compresses under the management of Inman & Co., and by them as well as others was held in the highest regard. He possessed much nobility of character and commanded the admiration of those who knew him well. He was only 43 years of age at the time of his death. His affectionate wife and fond brother have the earnest sympathy of many friends here. (The Galveston Daily News, Galveston, Tex., Vol. 48, No 248, Ed 1, Dec 31, 1889
