Obit - Coldwater Chronicle - December 13, 1931

Henry Knapke, a native and greatly esteemed citizen of Marion Township, passed away at his home at 10 o'clock Sunday morning, December 13, following an operation at his home for the removal of a tumor on December 8, and owning to his weakened condition, due to several months illness, he was unable to recover from the operation. He was confined to his bed for one week, and passed peacefully away well qualified with the last sacraments of the Catholic Church, of which he had been a lifelong and consistent member. Mr. Knapke was born on the farm on which he died December 2, 1850, and at death had reached the age of 81 years and 10 days. He was engaged in farming practically all his life and had spent his entire life on the farm on which he died with the exception of about three years that he resided in the village of Maria Stein. Mr. Knapke was married to Miss Theresa Seitz November 22, 1877, at Maria Stein, and this union was a most happy one and was blessed with four sons and four daughters, all of whom are living. A memorable event in their married life was the celebration of their golden wedding on November 22, 1927. The deceased was a pioneer resident of Mercer County and by his work and energy was a large contributor to the advance and success of the county. He was a kind, Provident and loving husband and father, a good neighbor ever ready to help where help was needed, and was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. He was an honored member of the St. Joseph's Men's Society of the Maria Stein parish and a member of the St. John's Catholic Church all of his life. Surviving are his widow and the following children -Bernard Knapke of Ft. Recovery, Jos. Knapke of St. Peter, John Knapke of Chickasaw, August Knapke on the home farm, Mrs. Catherine Eyink of St. Henry, Mrs. Elizabeth Braun of St. Marys, Sister M. Delphina, teacher at Regina High School in Cincinnati, and sister M. Eugenia, teacher at Holy Rosary school in St. Marys. There are 41 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in St. John Catholic Church at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning, December 16, Rev. Sebastian Kremer, nephew of the deceased, was celebrant at Levitical high mass, assisted by Rev. J.O. Missler, local pastor, and Rev. Julian Voskuhl of St. Charles seminary at Carthagena. Burial was at St. John's cemetery. The funeral was largely attended. May his soul rest in peace.
