Maine Governor. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1877, studied in Germany, attended Harvard University Law School and became an attorney in Rockland. Deciding to pursue a career in business rather than law, he joined one of his family's ventures, a wholesale and retail grocery company. In partnership with his father he later formed the Cobb Lime Company, serving as its President until selling it to another lime manufacturing corporation in 1900. Cobb was also a director of several banks, trust companies and railroads. A Republican, from 1889 to 1890 he served as a member of Maine's Executive Council. In 1904 he ran successfully for Governor and served two terms, 1905 to 1909. His reforms as Governor included replacing a fee system for many state officials with a set salary, and the creation of a State Auditor. In 1910 he ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate. After leaving office he returned to his business interests, including serving as President of the Bath Iron Works, remaining active until his health declined a few weeks before his death.
