Charles Tripp Lane in later years used the middle name Charles Sherman Lane to avoid mix ups in the mails and other official papers since his grandfather also shared the same name of Charles Tripp Lane. He was born on Bunker Hill in Clinton Twp, Wyoming Co, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Clarence David Lane (1883-1944) and his wife, Lillian Jane Rosengrant Decker (1883-1947). On August 14, 1926 Charles married Ruth F. Kingston (1909-1987) in Tunkhannock, Wyoming Co, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Kingston (1870-1935) and his wife, Catherine West Potts Kingston (1872-1955). Charles Sherman Lane worked 52 years for the Lehigh Valley Railroad, starting initally as a waterboy during the summers, working on the maintenance of way gang and many years as the local truck driver with the responsbilility of transporting the men to work sites throughout Wyoming County, Sayre and Coxton Yards. He also spent many a year laying ties and rails, acting as foreman, and even guarding the Vosburg Tunnel west of Tunkhannock during the War Years. In 1929 Charles and his wife, Ruth, purchased a house on what is now called Hazel Street in Tunkhannock. At the time they bought the house the mail was delivered to the various little deadend streets collectively known as Winola Avenue where the mailman, Arnold Platt delivered the mail daily to a long line of mailboxes for the various residents collectively known as residents of "The Hill". They continued to live there throughout their entire married lives and happily raised two children there.
