Bessie was the daughter of Lewis John Nickens and Rebecca Ann Jordan/Jurden born in Fauquier County, Virginia. She was the 9th of sixteen children: Rosa Lee (1868-1937), Snowden (1871-1879), twins Anna Rebecca (1874-1957) & Abner (1874-1927), Mary Virginia (1876-1937), Catherine (1877-1957), John Lewis (1879-1950), James Matison (1881-1939), BESSIE (1883-1946), Nancy Walden (1885-1941), Robert Carroll (1887-1964) , Eva Willis (1889-1944) , Gracie Hilda (1891-1969), Ethel (1893-1963), baby boy (1894-1894) and Lucy Henrietta (1895-1986).

Bessie married Matthew Lee and together they had 13 children: Rebecca, Rosa Alice, Caretta, Matthew Harrison, Nancy Willis, Martin Van Buren, Margaret, Pleasant, James Madison, Phillip Abraham, Minnie Grey, Louis Randolph and William Calvin.
