Harvey was the son of Charlie Edwards and Lula Hodges Edwards. His siblings were: Harley Harb, Edna Pearl (Grover Flippin), Howard, Jesse Edgar., Payton Rowe, Walter, and Raymond W.

He married Ruby Oakley in Lee Co. in 1935 and they had at least six children; James Robert, Elmer Lee, Bettie Joyce (Thomas Edward Cook), Barbara Jane, Peggy Carol (Tommy Ring), and Charlie Wayne. Joyce Cook (Bettie Joyce) was living in Florida in Nov. 2018.
