41st Arkansas Governor. He served as Governor of Arkansas from 1981 to 1983. A Republican, he defeated incumbent Governor Bill Clinton when Clinton sought a second term in 1980. Clinton defeated Governor White in a rematch in 1982. A career banker, White served as director of the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission from 1975 to 1977, and as director of the Arkansas State Bank Department from 1998 until his death. He was a graduate of the US Naval Academy and served in the US Air Force. One of his first missions was to fly a division of the 101st Airborne from Kentucky to Little Rock during the 1957 integration crisis at Little Rock Central High School. He died of a heart attack at his home in Little Rock.
