Bert Jr. was the son of Bert Sr. and Pearle Nunn Hanes. As a young man growing up in Nebraska, his musical talent was recognized and he was often called upon to perform before various community functions. Upon graduation from Parks, Nebraska High School in 1947, he worked for farmers in the area, but decided in 1949 to begin a career in the United States Army, where he served for 20 years. His tours of duty took him to many places in the world, including two tours in Vietnam. Following retirement, he and his wife chose to live in Texas. They raised six children.
