"OBITUARY - Mary Josephine (Mathers) Pierce

Mary Josephine (Mathers) Pierce, eldest daughter of Somuel (Samuel) M. and Caroline (Daugherty) Mathers, was born February 13th, 1858 near Orangeville, Indiana and departed this life March 7, 1952. Age 94 years and 24 days.

When she was only five years of age, her father died while serviing his country in the War of '63. With her baby sister, Elzora, she grew to womanhood in the Orangeville nieghborhood.

She was united in marriage to Elizier (Eleazer, Eleazor) Jacob Pierce April 27th, 1875. They established a home in Northwest Township, Orange County, Indiana where she lived until 1917, except four years she lived in Paoli while her husband was Sheriff of Orange County.

On August 13th, 1912, her husband passed away. Five years after his death she sold her country home and moved to West Baden Springs.

She united with the Bethel Christian Church near Orangeville about 1873. Helped to build the New Antioch Christian Church near her home in Northwest Township.

After moving to West Baden Springs, she helped to establish the Christian Church at that place. She was ever faithful in the work of her Lord and Master until called to her reward after a life of more than four score of years.

She leaves to mourn their loss, a foster son, Albert W. Heckler, wife and family, many nieces and nephews to whom Aunt Josie had endeared herself and a host of friends.

We only know that she has just passed on To a fairer and brighter climb,
Where God and the angels will welcome her, in that heavenly home sublime.

We mourn not for her as dead, She's only asleep to awaken with the Lord,
For, 'The dead in Christ' shall arise, Has been promised in His holy word.

When the mists have cleared then we'll see her
In that spiritual body so bright and fair,
For 'we shall know as we are known'
When we gather over there.

Card of Thanks:

We wish to express our thanks to everyone who offered their assistance and sympathy at the death of Aunt Josie Pierce. We especially thank Rev. Howard Wardrip for his comforting words, the singers Harriett Brown and Doris Wells, the pallbearers, for the beautiful floral tributes, and the flower girls.
