A native of Vermont, he moved to Washington, D.C. in the early 1930s with his family, where he graduated from St. John's College High School in 1937. He enlisted on March 7, 1942 in the Army Air Forces. He flew 31 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. Immediately after the war he was assigned to MacDill Air Field in South Tampa, where he and his wife Anna gave birth to a son on November 2, 1945. In 1948 he was serving as a statistical officer for the 36th Troop Carrier Squadron at Greenville AFB.

In 1962, while an electronics maintenance officer assigned to Tinker AFB in Oklahoma, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal 3 times, the third being awarded in 1966 for meritorious service as commander of the 28th Armament and Electronics Maintenance Squadron at Ellsworth Air Force Base.
