Steven L. Douglas died of cardiac arrest Dec. 5, 1998, in Annapolis, Md., while serving as a midshipman fourth class at the United States Naval Academy. He was 20. Memorial services were Dec. 9, 1998, at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. A funeral and burial took place in Visalia, Calif. A memorial service was held at Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna, with the Rev. Randy Parshall officiating.
Mr. Douglas was born July 21, 1978, in San Jose, Calif. He attended Kenai Central High School, where he set a school record for football kickers in 1996 and was nicknamed the ''Boy with the Golden Leg.'' While attending school in California, he was involved in tennis, soccer and football. He earned several awards for tennis, including Most Valuable Player, and was honored in football as part of the All-State Football Team in Alaska in 1996. Mr. Douglas enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November 1996, completed boot camp and proceeded to Naval Nuclear Power Training School in Orlando, Fla., where he graduated in March 1998, earning the Commanding Officer's Student Personal Excellence Award. Upon receiving this award, he was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, where he participated in the football program as wide receiver and kicker. His family stated, ''Steven will be remembered for his integrity, honesty, loyalty, consideration of others, intelligence, his strong faith and sense of humor. The promise of the future shone brightly for Steven.''
Mr. Douglas is survived by his stepmother, Katherine Godek; stepsisters, Harmony Smith and Daneka Godek; grandparents, Truman and Jeanette Douglas; uncle, Glenn Siebert, all of Kenai; grandmother Ellen Siebert; uncle Robin Siebert; uncle and aunt, Scott and Pamela Seibert; cousins, Kristofer, Nicholas and Chelsie Siebert, all of Anchorage; uncle and aunt, Dennis and Mary Kaufman of Scots Valley, Calif.; uncle and aunt, Bill and Judy Downard of Escalon, Calif.; great-uncle and -aunt, Herb and Mae Constant of Danville, Calif.; cousins, Lisa Kaufman, John Kaufman, Denise Sharma, Sharon Sparvoll, Kathy Halpin and Debbie Cornella, all of California; mother, Janice Reagan of Dinuba, Calif.; and grandfather, Russ Patton of Visalia, Calif. He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Douglas; and his grandmother, Marie Patton.
