"The LaFayette Sun" - March 20, 1901:

Death of Mr. D. E. Denney.

At the home of Mr. S. P. Greer, in the western part of town, on last Saturday morning, the spirit of David E. Denney took its flight from the dwelling of clay and winged its way into the silences of the great beyond. His attending physician states to us that his death was caused by ureamic coma due to Bright’s disease and that he had been afflicted with kidney trouble for some years, when a few weeks ago he took grip, which developed into pneumonia. He kept up and looked after business till Wednesday of week before last, when he could no longer resist the power of disease. He went to his room and finally took to his bed, where he fought nobly to conquer the last terrible enemy, but to no avail. The ministrations of his dear wife, many friends and loved ones, and the skill of the physicians availed naught, and with peace brooding gently above his couch he slept sweetly till the dawn of a brighter and better day.
Dave Denny was a high-toned Christian gentleman, one who was honorable and true to the instincts of noble manhood. He was modest and yet firm. He had friends because the people among whom he lived trusted in him. He loved little children and was their friend. He was cautious, brave and true. The principles of the noble order of Knights of Pythias he ever exemplified in his daily walk. The truths of Christianity he lived simply and without much ado. He will be missed by those who knew him best. As a businessman he was attractive to business. As a member of the city council, he was watchful of every interest of the town.
The burial told place Sunday afternoon from the Baptist church, and a large concourse of friends who followed the body to its last resting place was a testimonial of the esteem in which he was held. The floral tributes to his memory were sweet tokens of appreciation.
The services were conducted by Rev. J. L. Thompson, assisted by Rev. S. L. Dobbs. The local lodge K of P. took charge of the remains at the grave and laid the body gently away till the last call shall be made for all to meet in the Grand Lodge at the last great day.
The Sun can deeply and feeling offer sympathy to the bereaved ones for the editor knew Dave well, and all he knew of him was good.
