Thiel William Smith, 88, returned to his Heavenly Father on Monday August 8, 2011.
He was born November 18, 1922 in Georgetown, Bear Lake, Idaho to George Milton Smith and Sarah Lee Esther Baird. He married Beulah Allegra Lewis, September 3, 1946 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Thiel was raised on a ranch in Georgetown, Idaho. He lost his mother at the age of six. After graduating from high school, Thiel was inducted into the military. He was a member of the Army 17th Airborne Division, participating in the European Campaign during WWII. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and spent 11 months recuperating at Bushnell General Hospital in Brigham City, Utah.
Thiel graduated from Utah State University with a degree in accounting, and later received a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Utah. Thiel and Beulah made their home in Ogden where he was a Certified Public Accountant. He worked for Marquart, Powell Industries, University of Utah, the LDS church, Permaloy Corporation, Hill Air Force Base and retired from Defense Depot Ogden.
He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has held many positions in the church working with the scouts, as stake finance clerk, bishop's counselor, bishop, and stake high councilor.
Some of his interests were fishing, hunting, and camping with his sons, family, and friends. He enjoyed square dancing with his wife, gardening and working in his yard. He also enjoyed riding horses and driving cattle with his brother Lloyd on the family ranch.
Thiel is survived by five children, Verlin (Cindy) Smith, Brad (Cathy) Smith, Karen (Doug) Browning, Malia (Val) Gabbitas, Natalie (Will) Ormond, daughter-in law Sherrie Schroen, 24 grandchildren, 35 great-children, one sister, Maude Call and step-sister Adell Hoff Modula.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beulah, son George, granddaughter Ashlee Ormond, his parents, step-mother Clara Porter Hoff Smith, three sisters, Vera, Verda, Nina, brothers Lloyd and Wade, and step-brother Fred Hoff.
The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at the Silverado Senior Living care center and Silverado Hospice for their care of Thiel.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Rock Cliff 7th Ward chapel, 300 Gramercy, Ogden, UT.
Friends may visit the family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
