Rita E. Herbold
Rita E. Herbold, age 80, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at the Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow, Montana.

Rita was born on January 6, 1931 in Glasgow, Montana, the daughter of Louis and Elvira (Osterberg) Wesen. She was born deaf, living with 9 sisters and brothers on a farm west of Glasgow. She attended public schools for four years. When she was twelve she went to live with Aunt Hazel in Minneapolis, MN so she could learn to read lips and speak. Her family worked with her speech, and her mother taught her the Lord's Prayer.

From the time she was 15 to 21 years old she attended the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind in Great Falls. Following school Rita went home to Glasgow and helped on her family farm. She was John Wesen's hired help and could drive tractor, trucks, and equipment. She was also good around animals and was the only one who could catch a wild horse and ride bareback. Rita liked to go goose hunting with her brothers.

Her mother wanted Rita to be self sufficient and sent her in 1961 to Great Falls Business College.

Rita met Walt Herbold in Great Falls and two years later was married November 2, 1963 in Havre, MT. They lived one year on his farm in Hingham, sold it, and moved to Great Falls. She began working at MSDB in 1966. Both she and Walt worked at the old dormitory. Walt worked as a housefather for the deaf. Rita had a variety of jobs, including housemother, mending, laundry, dining room and housekeeping.

After 24 years of marriage, her husband passed away in 1988. Rita continued to work for MSDB and was there for 33 years when she retired in December of 1999. In 1999 her brothers and sisters sold her house and moved her into Rainbow Assisted Living for a year. She moved to Glasgow and lived nine years at Nemont Manor. She became blind in 2006, and she stayed in Nemont Manor with the help of Kay Hedalen and home care. She was at Valley View the last two years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Herbold, Wesen brothers, Alton, Clayton, Maurice, Paul, and Forrest, two sisters, Vera Melanson and June Kimpton.

Survivors include her brother, John Wesen, of Glasgow, MT and a sister, Myrna Bell, of Sheridan, WY; and 32 nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations my be made to Montana School for the Deaf and Blind in Great Falls, MT or Christ Lutheran Church for the Deaf, Great Falls, MT.
