Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete, Professional Basketball Player. He attended Richwood High School (West Virginia) and played collegiate basketball at West Virginia Tech. Following graduation, he joined the United States Navy and during that period played AAU Basketball, earning All-Navy Team status twice, also receiving tournament MVP honors, as he led the Armed Forces All-Stars to a National AAU Title in 1968. Along with future star NBA players Spencer Haywood, Charlie Scott and Jo Jo White, Barrett (at the guard position) was a key member of the United States Men's Olympic Basketball squad which won a Gold Medal over Yugoslavia during the 1968 Summer Games in Mexico City. He was signed as a non-drafted player by the Washington Caps of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1969 and produced his most successful season (1969-1970) as a professional, by scoring a career-high 1,252 points, earning First-Team ABA All-Rookie honors. Barrett compiled 1,152 points with Virginia during the 1970-1971 season, as the Squires were en route to the ABA Eastern Finals. During that postseason, he averaged 16.8 points per-game. He concluded his career with the San Diego Conquistadors during the 1971-1972 season, amassing 2,500 total points in 187 ABA games. Following his basketball career, he worked for the Wrangler Jeans Company.
