Sanford married Jane Cottier in Elyria either on Dec. 23, 1859 or Jan. 1, 1860. They do not appear in the 1860 U.S. Census. Obviously thee is confusion over the exact date of the marriage.
Sanford enlisted in Comapny H, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at 23 years of age, August 2, 1862 at Elyria, Ohio in Lorain County, for a 3-year term of service. Occupation: Farmer. He was mustered out with Company H at Raleigh, North Carolina, June 12, 1865 at the close of the Civil War. Rank: Private. His name appears on the Eaton Twp. Civil War memorial located in Butternut Ridge Cemetery at Butternut Ridge and Parsons Roads in Lorain County.
In the 1870 U.S. Census for Eaton Twp., Lorain County, Ohio, Sanford, 50, was shown farming, with wife, Jane, 37, and sons, Wallace, 8, and William R., both born in Ohio. Sanford applied for an invalid Soldier's pension, June 4, 1879, which was issued as Certificate #350243.
