Kansas City, MO - A former circus star, whose career as a trick rider was ended by a fall that left her a helpless invalid, suffocated Wednesday in an over-heated house-trailer.
The coroner listed her as Mabel M Baronski, 47. Circus fans knew her years ago as Mabel Barnes, whose brightly colored western attire and prancing horse enlivened circus parades along many main streets across the nation.
Her husband, Pinky Barnes, who gave up his own career beneath the big top in order to take care of his pretty wife, returned from work early Wednesday to find the trailer "stifling hot", and his wife dead.
Pinky said he did not know what he will do now. "It may be pretty late, but I think I'll go back to show business," he said.
Twelve years had passed since Pinky quit circus life. "She couldn't travel anymore, and I couldn't leave her," he recalled. But he continued to work with dogs and horses while they lived on what he earned by driving a taxicab 10 hours a day, training horses for other people and teaching other people's youngsters to ride.
"I'm breaking in a dog and pony act now," he said. "Mainly I was doing it because it pepped Mabel up. It's white horses and white dogs and I think I'll work Mabel's name into the act's title some way."
