Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 4th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, then finally as Colonel and commander of the 8th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier general, US Volunteers on February 10, 1865
