James was the son of Luther Marion Crumpley and Eliza Gold of Stone County, MO. He married Mabel Jones on November 14, 1934. They came to California in 1937 and settled, at first, in Reedley, Fresno County, and moved to Modesto in 1942. Their sons, Harold and Wayne, were born in those communities, respectively. James was a milkman for thirty years before suffering a heart attack that killed him at the age of 56. He was a great Giants baseball fan.
