Just seventeen years ago today, one of the best known and most beloved of all the pioneers of not only this county, but of the entire bay region, one of the men who had done most to shape the destinies of this great commonwealth facing the western sea, Patrick Tormey passed away in a picturesque country mansion o'erlooking, on the on side an expanse of beautiful waters, on the other, beautiful hills and dells, and was followed from the place that by his indomitable will and energy he had made one of the historic landmarks of this beautiful western lands, by the largest concourse of mourning friends that had ever before, or has ever since, traversed the highways of Contra Costa county.

Seventeen years later, his elder son, John P[atrick] Tormey, beloved of all wherever and by whomever known, and particularly in Western Contra Costa, where he first saw the light of day, lived through childhood, the days of his splendid youth and the glorious days of ripening manhood, where he won his successes and made an enduring name for himself, will be followed from the same old country mansion, over the same old highway, to the same burial spot, by a host of sorrowing relatives and friends to be laid beside his father and other loved ones gone before, in the family burial plot in St Catherine's cemetery, Martinez.

John P. Tormey was born at Rodeo on May 4, 1876 and passed away in the home in which he was born on Tuesday morning, May 6, 1924.
