"OBITUARIES.
Tormey.
Ruth Tormey, member of a pioneer and well-known Contra Costa family, died Sunday evening at a local hospital after a long illness at the age of 84. One of eight children, Miss Tormey was born at the town of Rodeo which was adjacent to the ranch holdings of her parents, the late Patrick and Mary Tormey, for whom the town of Tormey was later named. At one time the Tormey land holdings on the waterfront ranged from Pinole to Pittsburg. Her father came to the area in 1865 the same year he married Mary Matthews. He farmed and kept dairy cattle on his Rodeo ranch. The old family home where the Tormey children were raised is now the site of the Union Oil Company Cracking Plant. Mr. Tormey served the county for many years as a Contra Costa Supervisor. His name is on the cornerstone of the old court house.
Miss Tormey, a long time member of the St. Agnes YLI of Pinole, came to Martinez 33 years ago where she made her home with her surviving sister Verda Tormey. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
The recitation of the rosary will be held tonight at 8:15 at the Connolly and Taylor Chapel in Martinez. A mass of the resurrection will be celebrated tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catherine's Church. Burial will be at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery."
