Gust O. Kundert was born December 7, 1913, in Walworth County, South Dakota, to Otto J. Kundert and Maria (Rieger) Kundert. Including Gustav, the firstborn son in this family, Otto and Maria Kundert became the parents of nine children, five sons and four daughters -- with one daughter, little Hilda, passing away in infancy.

Gustav Kundert enlisted in the military service in 1941 in Chicago, Illinois, and served in the U.S. Air Corps.

Gust married Minnie Bahling, and they were blessed with three children. Mrs. Kundert preceded her husband in death, passing away in 1964.

A TRIBUTE TO A SOUTH DAKOTA LEGISLATOR:
Representative Gust Kundert (from Mound City, Campbell Co., S.D.), served 6 Years in the SD House of Representatives. Years served: 1983-1988.
.
During his last years as a legislator, Representative Gust Kundert became an advocate on behalf of individuals with autism; lobbying in support of an "Autism Task Force" to study to unmet needs of South Dakotans with autism. The resulting "Report of the South Dakota Autism Task Force" provided concrete recommendations -- which laid the foundation for parent-initiated legislation that would to serve to protect and improve the lives children and adults with autism spectrum disorders. Representative Gust Kundert's advocacy truly "made a difference" in the lives of South Dakotans with autism. His accomplishments will never be forgotten.

Gust Kundert passed away March 23, 2000.
He was an honorable man who spent much of his life in service to others. He will be missed by all who knew him.
