"The LaFayette Sun" - September 10, 1913:

Death of G. L. Griffin.

There passed away at his home here last Saturday at one o'clock one of Chambers' oldest citizens. In the death of Green L. Griffin the town and county loses a citizen whose life for many years has been marked by influences for the good of his fellowman. In his own quiet way he met duty as it came to him, and without counting the cost he served his friends faithfully.
Green L. Griffin was born October 7th, 1827, in Jasper County, Ga., and moved to LaFayette Jan. 1st 1866, thus having been a resident of Chambers County for 48 years. For a number of years he was in the mercantile business and in this was successful, but about 20 years ago he retired from the arduous activities of business life. Though not engaged in business, his life was not spent in idleness, but he was able to look after affairs that engaged his attention. In 1904 he was elected County Treasurer, service to 1908 and his official duties were given that careful attention which was his characteristic.
Mr. Griffin, tho not performing the duties of a soldier at the front during the war, yet his contribution to the cause of the Confederacy was no less important, for he was a gun maker holding a position in a gun shop in Coosa County from 1863 to the close of the war.
Coming from a family of sturdy stock, and possessing a rugged constitution, he lived to an age that is given to but few men. He was the last of a family of 16 children and left a family of 7 children. Surviving him are Mrs. Martha Simms, of Boston, J. C. Griffin, Mrs. S. E. Marable, J. D., C. W., Lee and Miss Annie of this city and a large number of grandchildren.
The funeral took place from the Baptist Church last Sunday afternoon. The services being conducted by Rev. H. R. Arnold, assisted by rev. W. C. Bledsoe and Rev. W. T. Hollingsworth. The pastor delivered a most appropriate sermon on the Resurrection, while Dr. Bledsoe, a life-long friend of the deceased, paid a worthy and touching tribute to the Christian character and the daily life of Mr. Griffin. After the church services the body was taken in charge by the Masons, a fraternal order which he loved so well, and the final obsequies were had at the grave.
The body of Green L. Griffin sleeps in the grave, but his influence still lives, and beyond the sun-kissed hills of the Eternal Dawn we shall meet again.
"The Sun" joins the many friends in extending sincerest sympathies to the bereaved family and praying that a sweet benison of peace may rest upon them in this hour of sorrow.

Resolution on the Death of Green L. Griffin, Sr.

Whereas: Death has entered our circle and claimed our honored and well beloved brother, Green L. Griffin, and he has gone to his reward.
Resolved, that in his death LaFayette Baptist Church has lost a valuable and devout member, and we shall miss him sorely in our meetings, in the work of the church and in the walks of life.
Resolved further, that this church extends to his family in this time of sad bereavement its sympathy and love, and we point them to that "Great Day" when they may be reunited with him in the "Beautiful Beyond" where partings never take place nor sorrows ever come.
Resolved further, that these resolutions be spread on the minutes of this church, that a copy be sent to the family of our deceased brother, and that "The LaFayette Sun" be requested to publish them in its columns.
