James enlisted for Civil War army service, August 9, 1862, in Company H, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at Elyria, Ohio(Lorain County), for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Farmer. He was promoted to corporal, May 1, 1863 and to sergeant, July 1, 1864. He was mustered out with Company H, June 12, 1865, at Raleigh, North Carolina, at the end of the war.

His middle name has been recorded as "Miles" and "Mills."
His state of Ohio death certificate(#41992) shows "Mills."
His cemetery monument shows "Miles."

Wife: Emma Blain(1850-1913) is buried with him.

At death he resided in Rockport which is today the Kamms
Corners neighborhood of the City of Cleveland, Ohio. He
formerly had resided at 1292 West 87th Street in Cleveland.
