Fred served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, enlisting in the Army in 1943 and released in January, 1946. He married Jannis Bryant, who was an actress, poet, lecturer, and author. In the 1960s, Fred lived in New York City and enjoyed a successful career as the manager of The Riverboat, a restaurant once located in the Empire State Building, and other fashionable restaurants.

Fred and his wife later moved to the Larchmont section of New Rochelle, Westchester County, NY.

Fred's wife Jan died in 1973. They had no children.

Fred continued to live in his New Rochelle home after Jan's death. He did not remarry. Fred passed away September 8, 1990 in that city, having been ill with pneumonia for a short time.

According to one of Fred's neighbors who was interviewed during our research Fred had a brother who came from California to attend Fred's funeral. Unfortunately, the neighbor could not remember the brother's name.
