WELLSVILLE - A. Jean Leake Broderick, 88, of Wellsville, died Sunday, August 7, 2011, at 8:25 p.m. at Life Line Hospital in Wintersville, Ohio, of complications following surgery.

She was born November 25, 1922, in East Palestine, the daughter of the late Arthur S. and Mayme (Kelley) Leake.

Jean was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church of Wellsville. Having graduated from Wellsville High School in 1941, she was a member of the WHS Alumni Association where she served as co-chairman and chairman for 50 years of the five year all-class reunion. Jean was the first majorette for the WHS Band in 1940-1941, and she was the drum majorette for the WHS Alumni Band for several years. Along with her husband, she received the GW McMillan "Friends of the School" Award in 1997, and they were also inducted into the Wellsville Legends in 2009. Her civic activities included the Wellsville Historical Society, Wellsville Arts Club, and Columbiana County Homemakers, where she was past-president. Jean retired in 1949 from the Ohio Bell Telephone Company where she was employed as a telephone operator for nine years.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Broderick, whom she married June 2, 1945; four daughters: Carolyn Broderick at home, Kathy Varner (Ed Nelson) of Sanford, NC., Maureen Pelley (Pete) of East Liverpool, and Colleen Brown (Steve) of Amherst, OH.; one son: Pat Broderick (Leslie Woodford) of Wellsville; and two sisters: Norma Wilcox of State College, PA., and Doris Geer of Shadyside, OH. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by three sisters: Hilda Crawford, Margaret McDanel, and Martha Byers; and three brothers: Howard, Edwin "Punch" and William Leake.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2011, at the First Christian Church of Wellsville, 831 Main Street, with Alan Boone, minister, officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery
