Military commander. Son of Abram Petrovich Gannibal, an African slave who gained favor in the royal court of Tzar Peter I, he followed in his father's footsteps achieving the rank of Major General and General-in-Chief of the Imperial Russian Navy. He lead Russian forces against the Turks in the Russo-Turkish War and helped found the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine in 1779.
