Family story is that John was shot at his home by a jealous husband, who was also an employee at John's horse farm and stable. A newspaper article was found after my 20+ years of searching for documentation, and John W. Blackard was indeed shot and killed.

John's son's obituary states that his father owned one of the city's (Blytheville) first businesses.

A granddaughter of John David Blackard, son of John W., told me that her grandfather took her to Chickasawba Cemetery in Blytheville when she was young, showing her John W. Blackard's grave. Most of the stones have been removed and his is lost. This old cemetery located at Chickasawba St/Hwy 61 N junction was long neglected and finally converted into a park with remaining markers embedded in the sidewalks -- it is now known as "Founders Park." On Find A Grave it is listed as Blytheville Public Library Cemetery

Founders Park is located on the south side of Chickasawba Avenue, at Walnut and Sixth. The park is a bird sanctuary and contains historic graves.
