Enlisted 20 Sep 1862 (credited to Readsboro, VT), mustered as Pvt. in Co. I 16th vermont Infantry 23 Oct 1862, mustered out 10 Aug 1863.
Also served as Sgt. in the Vermont Militia 1864-67. He retired from the Vermont Militia 18 Dec 1897 after attaining the rank of Bvt. Brig. Gen.
In civilian life he worked for the follwoing companies; New Home Sewing Machine Co., Estey Organ Co., and the Stanley Rule & level Co. He also served as a messenger in US Senate from 1900-13 and as a government clerk.
