Rufus Buell Thompson II went by his middle name, Buell. He was born on April 19, 1900 in York, Nebraska. Buell's father, RBT Sr., owned a very large and successful sheep ranch in Musselshell, Montana, which was then a part of Fergus County, Montana, about 70 miles from Lewistown. Buell was born at the family's second home in York, Nebraska where there was a sheep feeding station nearby in Seward, Nebraska.

Passed down history indicates that after RBT Sr.'s first son, Fay, died in 1897 from diphtheria and nearly caused the death of his daughter, Marion, RBT Sr. and his wife, Emmergene, decided to build the second home in York, Nebraska. On the 1900 Census, the family is listed on both the Fergus County, Montana Census and the York County, Nebraska Census.

Around 1905, RBT Sr. purchased a lovely home at 702 West Boulevard in Lewistown, Montana while still maintaining the sheep ranch. Additions were made to the home. By the 1910 Census, the family was listed as living at the home in Lewistown.

Buell was sent to St. James Military Academy for boys in Faribault, Minnesota for his schooling. A passed down family story states that when Buell was away at school, he became homesick. So, he skipped school and returned to his family's ranch in Montana. At the time, both of his parents were staying at their home in Lewistown and did not find out for several weeks that Buell was at the ranch instead of school.

Buell enjoyed being with his father at the ranch as much as possible. Unfortunately, Buell was just 14 yrs. old when his father died on December 6, 1914. The sheep ranch had been sold only a few weeks earlier in November.

On September 16, 1918, while Buell was serving in the US Army in Kentucky, he married Susan Martin who was also from Lewistown. Her family had a dairy farm just south of Lewistown. They raised five children in Buell's boyhood home, four girls (Ruth, Gail, Patty, & Beverly) and one boy (RBT Jr.). When their son, Rufus Buell Thompson, Jr. (III), joined the Marine Corps after graduating from high school in 1937, the family moved to San Diego, California where "Son" was going through military training. After all the girls had completed high school, they moved to Medford, Oregon and purchased a small home with room enough for their favorite horses. Buell and Susie divorced in 1947. Susie remained in Medford and Buell eventually settled in Lancaster, California.
