Military Rites For Volga Marine To Be Wednesday
Volga, Ia. - The body of Sgt. John H. Taylor, 21, who was killed in action in Korea Sept. 12, 1951, will arrive in Strawberry Point Tuesday for burial here. The Blake and Gill funeral home will have charge of services for the marine at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Methodist church here. Military rites will be conducted at the grave in Hill Crest cemetery by the Volga American Legion post. Born June 20, 1930, at Volga, Taylor was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Taylor. He was graduated from Volga High school in May, 1947, and enlisted in the marines that summer, for three years. In the reserves after his enlistment was up, Taylor was called to duty in November, 1950, and was sent to Korea in February, 1951. He served with an assault platoon in the first battalion of the seventh regiment of the first marine division. His parents received word Sept. 27, 1951 that he had been killed in action Sept. 12. Besides his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Thomas, of Volga, Paul, of Sioux City, and Robert, of Fremont. (The Telegraph-Herald, Monday, Jan. 21, 1952, p. 10, Col. 7)
