Partnered with his brother-in-law, Walter Webb, in a large land development in Los Angeles (Township of Rosecrans) that later became Gardena. He died at age 40 of a "morphine overdose" leaving a 10-year-old son who was then raised by his Aunt Adelaide Vercoe.

His wife, Nettie, died when their son was only 18 months old. He later married Kate Dunn Chapman 4-1899, and was estranged from her when he died.
