Charles "Charlie" Jungmichel, 93, of La Grange, Texas, passed away on Monday, December 27, 2010, at St. Mark's Hospital in La Grange.

Charlie was born in Boerne, Texas on December 7, 1917, the son of the late Herbert and Beatrice (Neve) Jungmichel. He married Evelyn (Carty) in August, 1942 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Charlie played football at Austin High School, Kilgore Junior College and the University of Texas where he received a B.S. Degree and a Masters of Education. He also served in the United States Air Force during WWII.

Charlie coached football at Corpus Christi High School for three years, La Grange High School for two years and then at Austin High School for a year. He returned to La Grange to become a Sales Representative for Southland Life Insurance Company. He went into management with Southland and moved to Dallas, Fort Worth and Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was a State Manager. In 1961, the family returned to La Grange where he became a real estate broker.

Politics also entered the picture and Charlie became a member of the Texas Legislature for 8 years. He returned to La Grange where he was Mayor for 8 years.

Community service was Charlie's great passion. He was a member of the American Legion, worked with the American Cancer Society for many years serving as president for 6 years and drove patients for treatment in Austin each week. He was a member of the Hermann Sons fraternal lodge and was named 1993 Humanitarian of the year. Charlie was a part of the Boy Scouts of America for 25 years, served on the La Grange ISD Board, first president of the La Grange Recreation Association, first secretary of the La Grange Chamber of Commerce, served 15 years with the Combined Action Board, 6 year board member of the Lower Colorado River Authority, 60 year Mason of the Lafayette Lodge #34 and a member of Tri-Cities Shrine Club. He served as an Honorary Texas Ranger and served as a volunteer for the La Grange Fire Department. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as Deacon, Elder, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school Superintendent. He was also a long time associate of Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Evelyn (Carty) Jungmichel, daughter Nancy Berger of La Grange, son Randy Jungmichel and wife Dinah of Austin, sister Jerry Jungmichel of Austin, 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, brother Buddy and an infant brother Harold Jungmichel.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Thursday, December 30, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grange with Dr. Walter Lee officiating. A private burial will be held prior to the service at La Grange City Cemetery.
