Politician and soldier. Served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Van Sant was the Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1895, and served as Minnesota governor from 1901 to 1905. He was also a three-time delegate from Minnesota to the Republican National Convention, and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
