Cornelius Fleeman, son of John Saunders and Martha Barnett Fleeman, died a heroic little boy at the age of 10. He was attending a special event in Winterville when he saw that a team of mules hitched to a wagon and left unattended and unsecured. They were growing restless and bolted. Cornelius was killed as he grabbed hold of them to restrain them, but the local paper says many more people could have been killed in this incident.
