Thomas Gains "Tom" Avant was born on June 16, 1926, to Troy and Sallie Ballew Avant. He passed away August 6, 2011, at Norman Regional Hospital in Norman OK. Tom attended Tahlequah High School before joining the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1945. He served at the end of World War II and during the Korean War. Upon leaving the service he worked with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife until his retirement in 1988. He was very proud of his Cherokee Heritage and was an active member of the Cherokee Tribe. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and friend to all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Jewel Carlile of Tahlequah OK, and brother Marion Avant of Tahlequah.
Tom leaves his brother William Avant of Memphis; his wife of 62 years, Wilma Avant, of the home; daughter Janet Cook of Chickasha OK; son Tom of Blanchard OK; son Scott of Fort Worth TX; son Troy, of Oklahoma City OK; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 12, at Fort Gibson National Cemetery, Fort Gibson OK.
