Air Force Staff Sgt. Shero was assigned to the 16th Special Operations Wing, Hurlburt Field, Florida. Shero was killed in the crash of a C130. For as long as her family can remember, Anissa wanted to travel the world. Short, strong and sassy, the dark-haired girl who became a staff sergeant in the Air Force just wasn't in a small-town frame of mind. Anissa married Nathan Shero, also a Special Forces airman. The couple was based at Hurlburt Field and had recently bought a home in Navarre, Florida. Anissa, who enlisted in 1992, was the first Air Force woman to die in Afghanistan. "When she called me a few days before she left, she said, ‘Well, I'm going again.' But she couldn't say where," her grandmother Edith Kenney said. "I told her to please write me a postcard or anything, just to say hello or goodbye. And she did. She was a thoughtful child."
