Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as Colonel and commander of the 4th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, then as the Chief of Cavalry on the staff of Major General William T. Sherman. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on December 12, 1864.
