Dale S. McNaul, 77, of 113 Church St., Bellville, formerly of Hathaway Road, died January 13, 1995 in Mansfield General Hospital after an extended illness. He was born July 12, 1917, near Lexington to Albert and Maude Shafer McNaul and was a lifelong Richland County resident. He was a 1935 graduate of Lexington High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in Africa, Sicily and Italy. He joined the Mansfield Fire Department in 1946 and was promoted to captain and later to assistant chief. He retired in 1974. In 1963, he received a commendation for saving Eddie Fields, who fell into the rain swollen Touby Run during a heavy storm. He received another commendation in 1965 for voluntary humanitarian services for organizing a search team following a fire that destroyed the former DeSoto Hotel in Mansfield. Mr. McNaul was a member of Irvin Hiskey Post #535 American Legion of Bellville and a 49-year and oldest paying member of Robert L. Castor Post #5101 VFW of Lexington. He was a member of the International Association of Firefights and the NRA. He was the organizer and host of the semi-annual reunion of the 457th Service Squadron of the army unit he served with during World War II. Surviving are his wife, DeLee Garber McNaul, whom he married April 5, 1941; four daughters and four sons-in-law, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one brother of Lexington. Funeral services were held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bellville, by the Rev. Douglas J. Pretorius. Mansfield firefights were pallbearers and honorary guard. Burial was in Bellville Cemetery where Irvin Hiskey Post #535 conducted military graveside services.
