Joseph L. Brubaker, veteran actor, dies
Services for Joseph L. Brubaker, 83 of 427 Eisenbrown Avenue Hyde Crest, Dean of Reading amateur actors the musical comedy performers. who died Sunday afternoon in the Reading hospital, where he had been a patient one day, will be arranged by F.F. Seidel Inc.
His career in local theatrical productions spanning more than 35 years.
Singing leading roles in Reading Opera Society Productions in the late 1920s and 1930s. He later was one of the organizers of the Reading Civic Opera Society and served as the first president.
A former member and treasurer of the Reading Choral society, he had been soloists for many years at first Presbyterian church and later sang in the choir at Trinity Lutheran Church until three years ago.
In more recent years Mr. Brubaker had directed the Reading music clubs annual production of the opera "Amahl and the night visitors. He was former president of that organization.
A life member of the Reading community players. Mr. Brubaker directed numerous productions at the groups various locations before the purchase of the present theater at 11th and Buttonwood streets.
Mr. Brubaker's last roles at the Playhouse were in Roma Greth's original play "Half-Ghost Half-Angel" and in"Altumism"
one of the three one act plays staged under the title "The Traveling Trio."
A former teller at the Berks Community trust company now American Bank for 25 years he retired and joined a New York comic opera guide in 1948.
For the last five years he appeared there in television shows and a revival of "As you like it" the late Christian Bean and "You can't take it with you".
When he returned to Reading in 1952 he was given the role of Finian in "Finian's Rainbow" staged in Reading civic opera company. He also appeared in summer productions at Green Hills theater.
Before retiring in 1963 from the business world he had been employed by the former Bureau of Naval Procurement.
Born in Denver Lancaster County a son of the late Samuel and Ella Dreiser Brubaker, He was a member of Isaac Heisler Lodge 660 FA&M
During World War I he served with the Army ambulance corps.
Surviving are his widow Lucille Hodges Brubaker and two daughters Bettinia, wife of Norman Dresher Laureldale and Anna wife of Richard Gasser West Reading and six grandchildren.
