JOHN SHIPMAN DIED IN FALL

Inmate of Brookside Home Plunges Four Stories to Death

John Shipman, 76 year old inmate of the Brookside home, was fatally injured shortly before midnight Tuesday night when he fell over a banister and plunged four stories to the basement of the home. Dr. Edward H. Kirschbaum, medical examiner, said death was accidental.
Dr. Kirschbaum said the man, admitted to the home last De. 9, had arisen to go to the bathroom when he suffered a dizzy spell and toppled over the third floor railing to fall through the stairwell to the basement.
The man died from a crushed chest and lacerations, Ddr. Kirschbaum said.
The medical examiner said Dr. R.J> Hinchey, former physician at the home, happened to be visiting at the institution and was in the office when he and several attendants heard the crash.
They found Shipman and carried him to the emergency room where he died.
Dr. Hinchey said that while he was physician at the home that he had been treating Shipman for dizzy spells.
Motor Patrolman Frank Leary investigated for the police department and summoned Dr. Kirschbaum.
The body was removed to the Mulville funeral home, 270 West Main street. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
