Chicago man found dead in falls area
The body of a 23-year-old Chicago man was found in brush west of Multnomah Falls on Oregon Scenic Highway 30, the Multnomah County sheriff's department reported Thursday.
The man was identified as John E. Hawthorne. The cause of death has not been determined. Police said it appears Hawthorne accidentally fell over a 100-foot cliff.
Deputies began searching an area above Wahkeena Falls on U.S. Forest Service land Wednesday. The man's vehicle had been found in the area Dec 14., but police initially believed the vehicle was abandoned.
Bert Whalen, sheriff's public information officer, said Hawthorne was a forestry graduate and had been in the northwest about three weeks seeking employment.
He was last seen Dec 14 when he left his Beaverton motel to drive to Moscow, Idaho, for a job interview, Whalen said. Hawthorne did not appear for the interview.
