Sidney Crawford, Tammany ex-official:

Sidney Crawford, former mayor of Pearl River and a member of the St. Tammany Parish School Board during the 1940s, died Wednesday of cancer at his home. He was 83.

Mr. Crawford was a lifelong resident of Pearl River. He was elected mayor in 1958 and served four years. In 1946 he was elected to the St. Tammany Parish School Board and served for six years. He was elected to the St. Tammany Police Jury in 1968 and served 12 years.

He served on the board of First Federal Savings and Loan in Slidell for 21 years and also served on the board of Slidell Memorial Hospital.

He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps camp, part of the New Deal work relief program during the Depression.

In 1945 he established Crawford's Grocery and operated it with his wife until 1981. He owned and operated a school bus and also owned a logging and trucking company for many years.

He worked for T.L. James Construction Co., before working for the highway department. He was a pile driver for the construction of Martin Marietta.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes McDonald Crawford; a son, Larry Crawford; a daughter Nina Myrl Ainsworth; five sisters, Mamie Cavet, Rosetta Craddock, Ida Moore, Alene Crawford and Sidonia Kennedy; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held Friday at noon at Williams Funeral Home, 67525 Highway 41 in Pearl River. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Highway 41 in Pearl River.
