Reed was also an inventor. He patented a worm and bug collector in 1913 when he lived in Waupaca, Wisconsin. In 1939 when he lived in Cameron, Barron County, Wisconsin, he tried to seek funding for a solar compressed air power generator he wanted to invent. He was denied this opportunity since he didn't know how to get a license for selling stock in his company or else because he didn't go about it the proper legal way. In any event, he got in trouble for trying to sell stock and nothing more was heard of this invention. He'd been working on it for 25 years.
Reed also worked as a wagon driver at the sawmill and as a potato buyer and warehouse manager.
His parents were William Bartlett and Eunice Woolsely. William was a sawmill superintendent. Reed had an older sister named Dickie. His mother died when he was a teenager.
Reed was married to a woman from Kansas named Mary Jane Head who was called Mayme. Her parents were from New York. They had daughters named Rita D., Venita F. and Althea M. Their sons were Gale W. and Rodney C.
